FBI warning: Criminals use AI to send malicious texts, voicemails impersonating U.S. officials

On May 15, the FBI issued a warning that criminals might be using artificial intelligence to send harmful text messages and voicemails pretending to be US officials. According to the FBI, since April 2025, imposters have been targeting individuals, particularly current or former senior US government officials and their associates. The bureau advises recipients to be cautious of these communications, as they could be part of smishing and vishing tactics aiming to deceive people into revealing personal information. Scammers build trust with victims and then try to persuade them to switch to another platform to obtain sensitive data. While the FBI did not reveal specific targets or whether anyone fell for the scheme, they emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against such fraudulent activities.
