Since 2015, Dico’s has marked ‘Krispy Day’ by introducing crispy items to its menu, but this year, their newest offerings have garnered more attention than usual due to their unique appearance. The “Black Gold Pepper Crispy Pork” was introduced at Dico’s outlets across China at the end of the previous month and has since gone viral on social media. The crispy strips not only appear charred but have also been compared to human feces in shape, leading to numerous humorous comments online. Despite the company clarifying that the meat is coated with a special “black gold coating” causing it to turn black when fried, many remain hesitant to sample this new dish.

Dico’s first gained attention in 2023 with its unique black gold coating when it launched the “Crispy Fried Chicken 3.0 Version.” The charred black appearance immediately caught people’s eye, with many joking that it looked overly cooked. The company disclosed that the special coating was created by blending deep-sea cuttlefish ink with black rice and utilizing a proprietary “high-temperature instant batter coating” technique to ensure rapid blackening during frying. While most were intrigued by the darkness, this time, the unappealing shape of the meat strips is the main turn-off.
