Military surplus technology is an excellent starting point to create a top-notch expedition truck. That’s why the team at Hunter RMV selected the Acela Monterra GL 4×4 platform for their Sherpa X overlanding vehicle. During a visit to the company’s headquarters in Minden, Nevada, we had the opportunity to experience the capabilities of the Acela Sherpa X firsthand.

Hunter RMV opts for the Acela Monterra GL 4×4 platform because of its solid foundation. These light medium tactical vehicles (LMTVs) are repurposed for demanding commercial fleet use and are further modified by Hunter RMV to become ultimate overlanding rigs. The trucks, which range from 12 feet, 2 inches to 12 feet, 10 inches in height depending on the attached habitat, are equipped with a powerful Caterpillar 7.2-liter turbodiesel I-6 engine generating 330 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque. The Allison seven-speed automatic transmission with an integral transfer case delivers power to the full-time four-wheel-drive system, providing a smooth and refined driving experience despite the industrial nature of the setup.

Although the Acela Sherpa X is heavy, weighing 20,600 pounds fully equipped, it can handle over 5,000 pounds of additional cargo. The vehicle is not very fast, reaching a top speed of up to 74 mph, but can be tested up to 80 mph for safety. The Acela features dual-circuit four-channel air brakes that offer good feedback and make it easy to bring the sizable vehicle to a stop. With air springs in the front and rear, the Acela provides a comfortable ride on the road, aided by a slow but deliberate steering rack.

For off-road adventures, the Acela is equipped with a central tire inflation system that allows for quick adjustment of tire pressure. Additionally, the vehicle includes a backup camera with predictive lines to assist in reversing without a spotter. The Acela’s compact size of 26 feet, 3 inches in length and 153.5-inch wheelbase makes it more manageable on trails compared to larger overlanding vehicles.

Inside the Hunter RMV Acela Sherpa X, the living space is well-appointed, resembling a small apartment. The model features amenities such as heating, air conditioning, a skylight, an exhaust fan, and a kitchen with modern appliances. The electronics are powered by a Victron Smart Energy system with a rooftop solar panel array, lithium battery bank, and inverter, allowing for extended off-grid stays. Exterior features like a slide-out kitchen, extendable canopy, and outdoor shower enhance the camping experience.

Hunter RMV offers customization options for their Sherpa box rigs, with prices ranging from $200,000 to $300,000. For a fully customized build, the cost could reach up to half a million dollars. The Acela Sherpa X provides a balance of military toughness and civilian comforts at a competitive price, making it a practical choice for serious overlanding enthusiasts.
