Carter was also recognized for his expertise in directing dance programs and producing ballet telecasts by Ruth Page, a prominent Chicago ballerina and choreographer.

Carter passed away at the age of 85 on April 11 in Palm Springs, California, due to complications from prostate cancer. Born in Flint, Michigan, he began his career at PBS station KTCA-TV in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he directed dance and opera programs before joining WTTW in 1967. Carter worked on various nationally distributed programs for the station, including reviving the popular show “Kukla, Fran and Ollie” and directing the award-winning series “Chicago Festival.”

Throughout his career, Carter demonstrated his versatility by working on a wide range of programs, from ballet to opera to news and public affairs shows. He was highly regarded for his work on “Soundstage” and received acclaim for directing episodes featuring jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald and other prominent artists. Carter’s dedication to his craft was evident in his attention to detail and ability to create engaging and professional broadcasts despite budget constraints.

In addition to his television work, Carter was involved in producing and directing various programs and documentaries, showcasing his talent and passion for storytelling. He continued his involvement with WTTW until his retirement in 2000 when he relocated to California.
