The National Transportation Safety Board announced on Wednesday that a Delta Air Lines Boeing 717-200 aircraft experienced an emergency landing in Atlanta on February 24 due to a lack of visible oil in one engine. The flight, Delta Flight 876, was en route to South Carolina from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when it had to return shortly after takeoff because of smoke filling the cabin. Flight attendants reported the smoke entering the aircraft through a door and vents, obstructing visibility. The pilots also observed smoke in the cockpit and low oil pressure in the right engine, prompting them to shut it down before landing. Following a safe emergency landing, the crew evacuated the 94 passengers, three flight attendants, and two pilots on board. Two passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation. The investigation, which involves NTSB and FAA specialists, revealed an oil system failure in the Rolls-Royce BR715-C1 engine.
