Chillmaster, a popular musician, has avoided prison time despite being found guilty of causing the death of a pedestrian while driving without a valid license. Instead, he has been sentenced to complete 420 hours of community service at Stoneridge Primary School. This decision follows a trend where prominent Zimbabweans have been able to escape jail time in similar cases. The ruling was issued by Magistrate Tongda’s Handd on 2nd May 2025.
The incident involved the fatal crash that took the life of 50-year-old Caston Charambira. Chillmaster was driving from Stoneridge to the city center when he hit Charambira, who was walking along the roadside towards MaSteps. The impact resulted in severe injuries, and Charambira tragically passed away. Chillmaster initially pleaded not guilty to both charges of culpable homicide and driving without a license during the court proceedings.
Chillmaster’s case is not unique as other well-known Zimbabweans have also been able to avoid imprisonment after being convicted of causing fatalities in accidents. The light sentencing has elicited mixed reactions on social media, with some calling for stricter consequences for such offenses. Despite the controversy, Chillmaster is set to begin his community service at Stoneridge Primary School soon.
