Houston (AP) – Junior Caminero hit a home run and drove in six runs, his highest total in his major league career, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 13-3 win over the Houston Astros on Thursday.
The game was tied 3-3 with no outs and two runners on base in the seventh inning when a single by Cuban Yandy Díaz put the Rays ahead. Tampa Bay extended the lead to 5-3 when Mexican Jonathan Aranda was hit by a pitch, and Díaz scored on a fielding error by Puerto Rican first baseman Víctor Caratini.
Caminero then hit his eleventh homer of the season off Bryan King (3-1) to make it 8-3.
The 21-year-old Dominican, who fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle, drove in two more runs with a double in the eighth inning, capping a five-run inning for Tampa Bay to make it 13-3.
Venezuelan José Altuve and Dominican Yainer Díaz each hit solo home runs for the Astros, ending their four-game winning streak.
Altuve tied the game at three with his homer to left-center field off Shane Baz with no outs in the sixth inning. It was Altuve’s third homer in three games, including two on Tuesday night.
The Rays took an early lead in the first inning when Díaz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
For the Rays, Cuban Díaz went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Mexican Aranda went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Dominican Caminero went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and six RBIs. Panamanian José Caballero went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
For the Astros, Dominicans Jeremy Peña went 2-for-4, Yainer Díaz went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Mexicans Isaac went 0-for-4, César Salazar went 0-for-1. Venezuelan Altuve went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Puerto Rican Caratini went 0-for-3. Honduran Mauricio Dubón went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
