Brazil calls on local groups to “inspire” governments in boosting climate action

Brazil, as the current president of COP30, aims to bring grassroots climate solutions to the global stage to push governments to enhance their national climate plans. Despite a deadline extension to September, only 21 countries have updated their targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. COP30 President André Aranha Corrêa do Lago stressed the need for action beyond governments, urging individuals, corporations, and educators to contribute to addressing climate change. At a meeting in Copenhagen, over 40 climate officials discussed preparations for the upcoming summit in Bélem. While progress towards the Paris Agreement goals is slower than ideal, there is still hope to limit global warming to 1.5C. The COP30 presidency plans to showcase ground-level climate actions to inspire leaders in creating NDCs, emphasizing the importance of local initiatives in combating climate change.
