Axpo, a Swiss renewable energy producer, has successfully carried out its first LNG ship-to-ship delivery at the Port of Algeciras in Spain. The operation involved transferring around 5,000 cubic meters of LNG from the small-scale LNG vessel Future to the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s containership Mariacristina. This achievement marks the expansion of Axpo’s LNG bunkering activities to a second Spanish port, following a similar operation in Málaga last month.

According to Daniele Corticommented, Head of Small-Scale LNG at Axpo, this successful delivery is a significant milestone for their LNG bunkering business. By broadening their operations to another Spanish port, Axpo is advancing its growth strategy for small-scale LNG and enhancing its reputation as a reliable LNG partner. Spain is a crucial market for Axpo, and the company plans to extend its services to major ports like Valencia and Barcelona. Axpo’s small-scale LNG services in Spain will be supported by two units with capacities of 7,500 cubic meters and 12,500 cubic meters, respectively.

In August 2023, Axpo signed a ten-year charter deal for a 7,500 cubic meters LNG bunkering vessel capable of transporting bio-LNG and ammonia in collaboration with Gas and Heat SpA from Italy and the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard. Recently, Axpo Iberia and Baleària, a Spanish ferry operator, completed the first bioLNG bunkering operations at Enagás terminals in Huelva and Barcelona. This initiative involved supplying bio-LNG to the Port of Málaga and the Margarita Salas ferry from the Rusadiran electric and dual gas-powered ferry.
