In a few hours, the world I’m stepping into will vanish beneath the waves. At Pillar Point Harbor, close to San Francisco, the low tide reveals a hidden ecosystem known as the rocky intertidal or “the tidepools.” Accompanied by zoologist Rebecca Johnson, we explore this seaweed-covered area, encountering unique species like the surfgrass and feather boa kelp.

Johnson introduces peculiar sea creatures, such as the boring clam and pale brittle star, showcasing the fascinating biodiversity of the tidepools. The presence of nudibranchs, or sea slugs, in various colors and patterns adds to the excitement of the expedition.
