Authorities in Indiana have discovered a theft ring involving stolen construction equipment, trucks, and trailers across multiple states. Two individuals have been charged, and more arrests are anticipated as the investigation unfolds.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office revealed on May 19 that they suspect numerous victims and counties have been impacted by the criminal operation. The investigation began after a series of heavy machinery thefts in Jasper County led detectives to a location in Putnam County, where stolen equipment valued at over $500,000 was recovered.

Working alongside Putnam County sheriff’s officers, investigators executed a search warrant that resulted in the arrest of Scott D. Rector from Winamac, Indiana, and Roy W. Poynter from Putnam County. Items seized included various construction equipment, a semi-truck, a semi-trailer, a Chevrolet Silverado, and a SureTrac trailer.

Rector faces multiple theft charges and felony resisting law enforcement charges, while Poynter has been charged with aiding in theft offenses. The thefts are believed to have occurred in several Indiana counties and neighboring states, with ongoing efforts to identify additional victims.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the case is still active, with more arrests expected as investigators delve deeper into the extent of the theft ring. For contractors looking to safeguard their equipment, helpful tips from a detective can be found by clicking here.
