Mercedes-Benz has revealed that the 2026 EQS model will be equipped with a yoke-style steering wheel system and steer-by-wire technology, replacing the traditional steering in the flagship all-electric Mercedes sedan. The new technology eliminates the need for a physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, with steering commands being transmitted swiftly and directly through an electrical cable.
The innovative steer-by-wire system not only enhances handling and maneuverability but also simplifies parking by eliminating the need to readjust the grip on the steering wheel. Mercedes stated that the new steering wheel system has undergone extensive testing, covering over a million kilometers on test benches and proving grounds.
The flattened underside of the steering wheel not only improves the driving experience but also creates additional space in the cabin for a better view of the driver’s display and easier access to the vehicle. Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, highlighted that the flat steering wheel, combined with SAE Level 3 automated driving, will enhance entertainment experiences in the future.
