AHLA and HTNG Launch New Safety Resources To Address Lithium Battery Fire Risks

In response to the increasing use of lithium-based batteries in various devices, such as e-bikes, laptops, and mobile phones, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) have introduced a set of safety resources to assist hoteliers in preventing, preparing for, and responding to battery-related fire incidents, many of which are inadvertently caused by guests. The toolkit also provides guidance for travelers to help them become more aware of potential risks.

Concerns about lithium battery incidents, especially from micro mobility devices, have been growing among hotels nationwide. Data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) shows that over half of lithium-related hotel fire incidents from 2020 to 2024 involved e-scooters and e-bikes.

AHLA President & CEO Rosanna Maietta emphasized the organization’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of guests and employees by continuously updating protocols and guidance to address new risks. She noted the increasing number of lithium battery fire incidents and the need for proper education and procedures to mitigate risks. The newly launched resources include best practices for charging and disposing of lithium-based batteries, an overview of best practices, a briefing video on safety risks and responses for hotels, a key card insert template for educating guests, an emergency response checklist for staff, and a printable Safe Stay guide for easy distribution.

These materials were developed through collaboration with more than 25 hoteliers, vendors, and experts in the HTNG workgroup to provide practical guidance on managing lithium battery safety. AHLA encourages its members to implement safe handling protocols, such as temperature control, monitoring, storage practices, and staff training on emergency response procedures.
