ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo to drive digital automation in shipyard operations

ABS and South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Mipo have joined forces in a collaborative project to create digital automation equipment for shipyards. The project will focus on incorporating smart technology like artificial intelligence, communication technologies, and robotics into HD Hyundai Mipo’s shipyard operations. ABS will provide guidance on smart technologies for shipyards to help identify areas for improvement such as advanced automation and data-driven intelligence. The joint development project also opens up the possibility for additional certifications from ABS, subject to meeting the required criteria. ABS’ Chairman and CEO highlighted how cutting-edge technologies are transforming shipyard production, enhancing safety, quality, and efficiency in shipbuilding processes. HMD’s President and CEO expressed hopes that the digital manufacturing initiative will become a global standard and improve construction efficiency for shipowners and classification societies. ABS has also approved HD Hyundai Mipo’s design for an LCO2 carrier, while South Korean shipyards have received ABS’ approval for ammonia ship designs.
