A male Asian paradise flycatcher with unique markings on its head has returned to the same garden in Colombo for four consecutive migratory seasons, sparking interest among bird enthusiasts in Sri Lanka. The bird’s consistent visits demonstrate a behavior known as site tenacity or site fidelity, where migratory birds return to the same location year after year. World Migratory Bird Day is observed in May and October to coincide with bird migrations in the northern and southern hemispheres. The online bird observation platform, eBird, is gaining popularity in Sri Lanka, with over 4,000 birders using it to track bird movements, showcasing the role of citizen science in birdwatching.
