Can Our Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Keep Up With Jeeps in Moab?

In the last few months, our yearlong evaluation of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has been quite eventful. The truck has faced snowstorms, helped rescue stuck vehicles, and carried heavy loads in its bed. It has traveled extensively across the United States and also enjoyed off-road adventures. Following our recent update in Ohio, we continued our journey to Moab, Utah, a renowned destination for 4×4 enthusiasts.

Moab is famous for its challenging trails that wind through rugged terrain featuring ledges, drops, and slickrock surfaces. The picturesque surroundings include the La Sal Mountains overlooking the Spanish Valley. During our visit, Moab was bustling with Jeeps participating in the annual Easter Jeep Safari, prompting us to test the capabilities of our Chevy on the trails.

Starting with an easy trail called “Fins ‘n’ Things,” we gauged how well the midsize pickup could handle the diverse terrain of Moab. The steep sandstone slopes tested the ZR2’s approach and departure angles, especially without the added protection of steel bumpers. Despite encountering some challenges like grinding sounds from the hitch scraping on rocks, the ZR2 showcased its off-road prowess by navigating obstacles with its impressive wheel travel.

The Colorado ZR2 came equipped with features like Terrain mode and locking differentials that enhanced its performance on rocky terrain. Although the truck faced limitations compared to heavily modified Jeeps, its skid plating and rock sliders provided essential protection. Tackling trails like Hell’s Revenge, the ZR2 demonstrated its capabilities, impressing onlookers with its stock configuration.

As we ventured back home, we noticed a decrease in highway efficiency, possibly attributed to worn tires and aerodynamic drag caused by carrying a Honda motorcycle. Despite this, the Colorado ZR2’s performance throughout our journey highlighted its durability and versatility in various terrains.
