How an $800,000 Overlanding RV Rig Gets Made

Hunter RMV specializes in creating durable overlanding rigs that combine hardcore capability with desired comforts. They have been in the expedition truck building business for over a decade. During our visit to their headquarters, we explored their various products that go beyond typical camper vans or RVs.

The first step in creating a Hunter RMV expedition truck involves an initial consultation where customers decide on a prebuilt box or a fully customized rig. The company works closely with customers to determine vehicle dimensions, intended use, and personalization options.

Hunter RMV uses platforms like Chevrolet Kodiak, Mitsubishi Fuso, Isuzu FTR MT3, and Acela Monterra GL LMTV for their builds. They perform chassis modifications before moving on to fabricating a four-point articulating subframe to enhance stability and protect the living space from vibrations.

Once the subframe is complete, they paint the cab and install a habitat, either prebuilt or custom-made. The interior is then outfitted with furniture and hardware according to customer preferences. Solar panels and electronics are added for comfort, powered by a Victron Smart Energy system.

The rigs include a kitchen with modern appliances, plumbing for freshwater and gray water, and a composting toilet. Some models feature a garage for storage or additional living space. Grills from Traeger and Blackstone can be found underneath the box on certain builds.

Hunter RMV offers customization options such as a passthrough between the cab and living area, Starlink satellite internet, a backup generator, and off-road lighting. Prices vary depending on customization, with pre-built models starting at $200,000 and custom builds ranging from $450,000 to $800,000.

Each Hunter RMV truck is a result of 2,000 to 3,000 hours of work and can take one to two years to complete. The company produces three to four rigs per year, so customers should expect a wait for their personalized expedition truck.
