Johnson Health Tech Trading is recalling around four million units of Bowflex adjustable dumbbells due to a safety concern where the weight plates can become loose and potentially harm users. The Consumer Product Safety Commission made the announcement, advising owners to cease using the dumbbells immediately and to request a refund. These dumbbells have been available for purchase since at least 2004. The company formerly known as Nautilus Inc. rebranded as BowFlex in 2023 and filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech Retail acquired the brand after the bankruptcy filing. There have been reports of plates dislodging during use, with some resulting in injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes, or contusions. In 2012, there was a recall of the 1090 model due to a weight selector dial malfunction. The recalled dumbbells allow users to lift various weights without needing multiple dumbbells. The affected units include the 552 model ranging from 5 to 52.5 pounds and the 1090 model ranging from 10 to 90 pounds. Johnson Health Tech Trading is offering refunds in the form of vouchers or replacement units. Customers who bought the BowFlex dumbbells may request a prorated voucher refund and are eligible for a one-year digital fitness membership. Johnson Health Tech Trading mentioned that the design of the updated 552 and 1090 models has been improved for enhanced durability but is not yet available for purchase.
