Collaboration on Hydrogen Established Between Belledune and Antwerp-Bruges Ports
On May 23, 2025, the Belledune Port Authority (BPA) in Canada and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium have formalized their partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together on creating a supply chain for clean fuels, focusing primarily on hydrogen and its byproducts. This agreement is seen as a significant advancement in establishing a transatlantic hydrogen value chain and promoting sustainable industrial growth in both regions. The collaboration will involve forming alliances among businesses, engaging with relevant public entities, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, and supporting the certification of environmentally friendly and low-carbon hydrogen.
Denis Caron, the CEO of the BPA, remarked on the importance of this agreement, stating that it strengthens their supply chain capabilities and development efforts, enhancing their readiness for cleaner industrial practices. Meanwhile, Kristof Waterschoot, CEO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, emphasized the collective nature of developing a hydrogen economy and sustainable industries, involving various stakeholders from different sectors and continents. The collaboration is expected to bolster ongoing hydrogen projects at the Port of Belledune and facilitate the export of hydrogen and its derivatives to Europe.
This partnership marks the fourth collaboration agreement for the Canadian port with major European ports, including the Port of Rotterdam, Port of Wilhelmshaven, and Port of Hamburg, all aimed at promoting clean fuels and sustainable energy initiatives.
