Anti-environmentalism is on the rise but it’s full of contradictions

Opposition to environmentalism is on the rise, with more frequent attacks on goals like net zero and resistance to conservation and anti-pollution measures. Recent election outcomes in the UK and the West suggest that these tactics are reshaping politics. Despite its sudden growth and strong language, anti-environmentalism is not firmly grounded, often presenting conflicting messages that go against common experiences.

For instance, former US president Donald Trump notably dismantled environmental protections during his term, yet claimed to be an environmentalist at a Wisconsin rally in 2024. This departure from traditional conservatism is evident in the anti-green stance of parties like the Republicans in the US, Reform in the UK, and others across Europe.

While organizations like the Conservative Environment Network aim to promote environmental initiatives among conservatives, many on the right are turning away from this tradition. Despite widespread public concern about climate change and strong support for environmental protection, the populist wave is challenging conservative values.

The disconnect between expressing love for nature and opposing measures to preserve it is a key characteristic of anti-environmentalism. Some individuals, like Trump, may claim to be environmentalists while acting otherwise. These shifting beliefs, along with contradictory stances on climate change, contribute to the complexity and unsustainability of the rise in anti-environmentalism.

The phenomenon is not limited to the West, as countries like China are making significant environmental strides despite being targeted in anti-environmentalist rhetoric. The global shift towards environmental consciousness challenges stereotypes of environmentalism as a Western concern, making the opposition to environmental initiatives appear increasingly perplexing and untenable.
