CNOOC Achieves ‘World’s First’ with Transport of Massive FPU
On May 11, 2025, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) successfully completed a groundbreaking transport operation involving an enormous floating production unit (FPU). This achievement is considered a global first by CNOOC, with the 100,000-ton FPU being built and transported entirely by the Chinese state-owned company. The operation, which involved the offshore integrated float-on installation and towing of the FPU, was supported by ships like Haiyang Shiyou 691 and Haiyang Shiyou 681. CNOOC describes this as one of the most complex and weighty offshore engineering projects worldwide. In addition to this milestone, CNOOC recently made a significant discovery in the Huizhou 19-6 oilfield, adding over a hundred million tons of proved in-place oil equivalent to its reserves. The company is also actively engaged in international projects, including extending a contract to Wood for assets in the North Sea.
