Vietnamese Oil Platform Undergoing Decommissioning Catches Fire
May 22, 2025, by Dragana Niksa

A fire has erupted on an offshore platform in Vietnam managed by Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP).
The incident took place at the Song Doc field off the southwest coast of Vietnam on the evening of May 21, 2025. This particular field has been inactive since February 2024, as decommissioning efforts are ongoing.
PVEP reported that the fire was quickly brought under control within 30 minutes and did not cause any environmental harm, nor did it disrupt normal oil and gas operations at other projects.
The company stated that they are working with relevant parties to determine the cause of the fire.
The Song Doc field, which started production in November 2008, is part of Block 46/02 in the Malay Basin, located 144 kilometers southwest of Ca Mau province.
The decommissioning project for Song Doc is considered the first comprehensive well decommissioning initiative in Vietnam and is deemed significant for the country’s oil and gas sector, paving the way for new services domestically and internationally.
