Wilson Sons, a Brazilian shipping company, has achieved a significant milestone in reducing greenhouse gas emissions at its Rio Grande Container Terminal by using 100% renewable energy. The company’s effort was recognized with an International Renewable Energy Certificate, confirming that the terminal’s Scope 2 emissions have been eliminated and that the energy used came from clean sources within the National Interconnected System (SIN). The verification was awarded by EDP Brasil, following the guidelines of the GHG Protocol. Wilson Sons’ CEO of the Rio Grande terminal, Paulo Bertinetti, stated that this initiative has led to an estimated 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the terminal, demonstrating progress towards cleaner and more efficient operations. The Rio Grande Container Terminal plays a vital role in trade for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, serving both domestic and international markets. Additionally, Wilson Sons previously announced a 55% reduction in emissions from cargo operations at the Santa Clara waterway terminal, achieved through a study comparing river and road transport routes. Cleiton Lages, the Environment and Safety Manager at Rio Grande, highlighted the study’s significance in promoting sustainability and meeting environmental targets.
