US bill poses challenges to renewable energy industry

The approval of the proposed budget reconciliation bill by the US House of Representatives’ Budget Committee may have a negative impact on the development of renewable energy and domestic manufacturing. This bill accelerates the phase-out of key clean energy tax credits, such as the 48E Investment Tax Credit and the 45Y Production Tax Credit, with reductions starting in 2029 and reaching 0% by 2032. According to Sylvia Leyva Martinez, a principal analyst at Wood Mackenzie, these changes could impede renewable energy projects in the US and create challenges for the clean energy sector as a whole. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) forecasts that the bill’s provisions could hinder the growth of the solar industry, impacting both manufacturing and job creation. Despite some positive aspects for manufacturers, such as the extension of the 45X tax credit, the overall outlook remains challenging. The bill is now set to proceed through the House Rules before reaching the House floor for further consideration.
