CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon quits amid potential Trump lawsuit settlement

CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon announced on Monday her resignation after four years, marking the latest development at the network as its parent company weighs settling a lawsuit with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” interview. McMahon, who oversaw both the network news division and news for CBS-owned stations, stated in an email to staff that there is a difference in opinion on the way forward between her and the company. She expressed that it is time for her to step down and for the organization to embrace new leadership.

McMahon has been firm in her opposition to settling with Trump, similar to “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens, who stepped down last month. Trump filed a lawsuit against CBS, claiming that an interview with his former political opponent, Kamala Harris, was edited in her favor. CBS News refuted this allegation. Paramount Global, CBS’ parent company, is in discussions to potentially resolve Trump’s lawsuit while also seeking regulatory approval for a merger with Skydance Media.

George Cheeks, co-CEO of Paramount and head of the CBS network, announced that McMahon’s top deputies will now report directly to him. McMahon acknowledged the recent challenges in her note to staff, expressing confidence in the leadership team she leaves behind.

Apart from the lawsuit with Trump, other tensions within Paramount have surfaced, including criticism from major shareholder Shari Redstone regarding network coverage of events like Israel’s conflict in Gaza. This led to increased oversight of “60 Minutes” stories, further contributing to Owens’ departure. CBS News is also working on establishing a new anchor team for the “CBS Evening News” broadcast amidst viewership struggles.

Cheeks commended McMahon for her efforts in expanding local news coverage at CBS stations and enhancing the network’s digital platforms.
