MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES), a German engine manufacturer, has successfully completed the type approval test (TAT) for its MAN L35/44DF engine designed for use as an auxiliary GenSet and electric propulsion. The testing, which took place at the STX Engine headquarters in South Korea from April 7-11, 2025, involved the evaluation of both methane-capable and methanol-ready variants of the engine. The upgraded L35/44DF CD engine features advanced technology such as an adaptive combustion control (ACC) system for optimal fuel injection conditions. The GenSet aims to reduce shipowners’ capital and operating costs while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. MAN ES officials expressed confidence in the engine’s appeal to container vessels and LNG carriers due to its strong performance, methane slip reduction, and readiness for future fuels like methanol. The successful testing of the 35/44DF CD engine aligns with MAN ES’ commitment to developing environmentally friendly and cost-effective marine propulsion solutions.
