Pro-Eu Centrist Nicusor Dan Wins Romania’s Presidential Election

Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, an independent presidential candidate backed by the Force of the Right (FD), gave a speech in Cismigiu Park, Bucharest, Romania, on May 18, 2025, following the release of the initial exit poll results. He claimed victory in Romania’s presidential election run-off against far-right nationalist candidate George Simion, who has accepted defeat. Dan won 54.22% of the vote as per official results, while Simion, representing the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, secured 45.78% of the vote. Dan expressed gratitude for the support received, emphasizing unity, honesty, and respect for the law and all citizens in his plans for Romania’s reconstruction. Simion pledged to continue fighting for freedom and shared values with like-minded individuals globally. The voter turnout was nearly 55.6%, and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine congratulated Dan, highlighting the importance of a strong partnership between the two countries. The election followed the cancellation of a previous run-off due to foreign interference, and the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautioned against disinformation campaigns linked to the election.
