Malaysian Company Seeks to Address Global Vessel Shortage with New Cable Laying Vessel

A marine services provider based in Malaysia is progressing towards the development of a versatile cable laying vessel (CLV) in response to the scarcity of specialized offshore vessels worldwide. Megamas Resources has entered into a letter of intent (LoI) with German shipyard Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven to initiate detailed discussions for the potential construction of the vessel, with the possibility of a second one. Partnering with Crewstone International Private Equity & Investments, the Malaysian company aims to collaborate with Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven and Ulstein Design & Solutions for the vessel’s delivery. The cable layer will meet DNV’s Clean (Design) and Recyclable class notations, and the first unit is projected to be completed by the end of 2027. This initiative follows a previous agreement in late 2023 between Ulstein Design & Solutions and Megamas Resources for the conceptual design of an energy-efficient cable laying and repair vessel, which will be 120 meters long, have a beam of 23 meters, accommodate 70 individuals, carry a deadweight of 8,000 tonnes, and achieve a speed of 14 knots.
