CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson have co-authored a revealing new book that presents a critical view of then-President Joe Biden during the 2024 election. The book portrays a president with declining physical and mental abilities, which his aides and advisors worked to hide from the public. Newsweek contacted Joe and Jill Biden’s office for comment on the matter.
Details and excerpts from Tapper and Thompson’s book, “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” have been published by various media outlets, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Axios.
The 2024 presidential race saw Biden exit in July following a poor debate performance against then-Republican nominee Donald Trump. Biden’s replacement as the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, faced challenges in assembling a team and addressing questions about Biden’s cognitive abilities. Claims arose alleging that the administration had concealed the extent of Biden’s decline from the public during the primary season.
Among the revelations in “Original Sin” are instances where Biden’s behavior raised concerns. These include a key advisor criticizing Biden’s decision-making process and an incident where he failed to recognize actor George Clooney, a longtime friend. The book also details an incident at a fundraiser where former President Barack Obama had to guide Biden offstage.
Additionally, there were discussions among Biden’s aides about whether he might need a wheelchair if re-elected, given his deteriorating physical condition. Despite these concerns, Biden’s team downplayed questions about his health, attributing any changes in his walk to previous foot fractures.
Statements from Biden and other politicians show a reluctance to dwell on past events, with a focus on moving forward. While Biden has expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have emphasized looking ahead rather than revisiting the past.
“Original Sin” is scheduled for release on May 20.
