Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasized the importance of tackling a “chronic disease epidemic” to improve America’s health during a budget hearing at the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies on Wednesday morning. In a separate session, Kennedy defended proposed budget reductions for 2026 during House and Senate committee hearings.

Kennedy faced questions from committee members about the budget reductions and the impact of President Donald Trump’s border security efforts on public health and safety. While some lawmakers praised the administration’s border security measures, others, like Rep. Rose DeLauro, criticized the proposed budget cuts, particularly in health programs, citing concerns about potential negative effects on Americans.

Kennedy outlined the HHS’s goals of addressing the chronic disease epidemic, delivering more efficient services to those relying on programs like Medicaid and Medicare, and reducing costs for taxpayers. He also highlighted the importance of states and localities taking the lead in responding to disasters at their levels.

During the hearings, discussions also touched on topics like drug prices, healthcare as a human right, and research regulations on infectious diseases. Senators raised concerns about potential cuts to programs serving middle-class and poor Americans, staffing reductions at NIH, lead poisoning, and delays in funding disbursements for programs like Head Start.

Protesters, including Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen, disrupted the Senate hearing, expressing opposition to U.S. support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Capitol Police arrested the protesters, charging them with various offenses related to disrupting the proceedings.
