Victoria, Canada – Bluebird Self Storage has recently purchased and revamped 826 Johnson Street in Victoria, British Columbia, which is known as one of the oldest storage facilities in North America. The facility is now open for business and is ready to rent units to both commercial businesses and residential tenants. Situated in the heart of Victoria’s downtown core, the building was constructed in 1901 and originally served as a boarding place for horses, with a freight elevator to transport them to the upper floors. Transitioning into a storage facility around 1920, it potentially became the oldest of its kind on the continent.
The acquisition of the building was made by Bluebird Self Storage through the ICM Bluebird Canadian Self Storage LP, completing their mission to establish a coast-to-coast network of storage facilities under a single brand. Bluebird has renovated the Johnson Street Self Storage facility, updating its interior with modern amenities and aesthetics while preserving its historical appeal. The old wooden lockers have been replaced with steel partitions and roll-up doors, and modern safety and security features have been installed. Additionally, a cutting-edge website with e-commerce features like online payments, reservations, and rentals has been introduced.
The property, conveniently located, offers 240 modern storage units available for lease to both residential and business tenants. Bluebird Self Storage’s CEO, Jason Koonin, expressed his excitement about the project, highlighting the remarkable transformation the site underwent. The company now considers this facility its flagship location on Victoria Island, British Columbia, and takes pride in the successful renovation of this historic site.
Bluebird Self Storage is recognized as the most innovative and rapidly expanding self-storage company in Canada, with a network of facilities across the country. The company actively engages in storage development projects, acquisitions, and third-party management, offering a personalized, boutique-like approach to site management focused on operations, revenue management, and digital marketing.
