Google is testing AI search on its homepage

Google has introduced a new feature called AI Mode next to its search button, replacing the “I’m Feeling Lucky” option. While not yet widely available, the feature is currently being tested in a location where Google rarely makes changes. A spokesperson confirmed that the feature has started rolling out to some users over the past week as part of Google’s experimental unit called Labs, where new features are tested with users who opt in. This move indicates that Google is exploring ways to integrate AI technology into its search platform, as it faces competition in AI-driven search.

Following the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, investors in Alphabet have expressed concerns that OpenAI could challenge Google’s market share in search by offering new ways for users to find information online. OpenAI recently launched “ChatGPT search,” positioning itself to compete more effectively with search engines like Google and Microsoft’s Bing. Despite Google’s Gemini AI product having 35 million daily active users, a recent analysis revealed that ChatGPT boasts an estimated 160 million daily active users.

Google is currently testing the use of “AI Mode” on its homepage, using its prime real estate to showcase AI technology. The company began testing various homepage designs internally and has experimented with different prompts for potential questions below the search bar, replacing the “I’m feeling lucky” feature. In a recent announcement, Google revealed plans to test “AI Mode” for select users, initially on its results page before expanding to the homepage. The company is also launching an investment fund named “AI Futures Fund” to support AI startups with early access to its AI models.
