Google and Elementl Power announced on Wednesday their collaboration to develop nuclear power projects, aiming to bring over 10 gigawatts online in the United States by 2035. Chris Colbert, Elementl Power Chair and CEO, emphasized the importance of such partnerships to secure the necessary funding for new nuclear projects. Amanda Peterson Corio, Google Global Head of Data Center Energy, highlighted the commitment to projects enhancing power grids’ strength and the reliability of advanced nuclear technology in providing continuous energy supply. The companies will work together on nuclear projects at three locations, with Google contributing early-stage development capital for three projects, each expected to produce at least 600 megawatts of nuclear power. This partnership aligns with Google’s efforts to secure 24/7 base-load energy for its operations and support power grid resilience, while aiding Elementl Power in achieving its goal of significant nuclear capacity expansion by 2035. Ryan Mills, Elementl Power Co-Founder and President, expressed the significance of the partnership with Google in advancing Elementl Power’s growth and catalyzing private capital formation in advanced nuclear projects. Google, along with other major corporate energy users, pledged in March to promote nuclear energy expansion to rapidly increase nuclear power capacity. Google’s previous agreement in October to purchase nuclear energy from Kairos Power’s small reactors reflects its commitment to meeting the energy demands of AI technology without raising its carbon footprint. The first reactor from this deal is projected to be operational by 2030, with additional reactors expected to come online by 2035.
