Domestic Travel Triumphs: 71% of Americans Opt for Local Summer Vacations

According to the latest findings from Allianz Partners USA’s Top Summer Travel Destinations Report, Seattle and Cancun are the top choices for American travelers this summer. The majority of travelers opt to explore destinations within the United States, with 71% of bookings made for domestic locations, while 29% are considering international getaways.

Domestic and International Travel Preferences

American travelers show a strong inclination towards domestic travel, with Hawaii’s stunning beaches being a favored destination. Honolulu and Kahului rank fourth and fifth, respectively, among the top domestic destinations. Other popular domestic spots include Orlando, New York, Boston, Portland, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Anchorage.

Top International Travel Destinations

When it comes to international travel, Mexico stands out as a popular choice, with Cancun, San José del Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta ranking among the top ten destinations. Other sought-after international locations include London, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Calgary, Paris, and Dublin, Ireland.

Research Methodology

The data for the report was collected by analyzing the online booking activities of customers purchasing airfare and package deals from partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance. The analysis focused on roundtrip flights departing from U.S. airports between May 22, 2024, and September 2, 2024, for trips lasting between five and eight days. Nearly seven million itineraries were examined using this approach.
