NKT Reveals Name of 200-Meter Power Cable Extrusion Tower in Sweden

NKT, a power cable manufacturer and installer based in Denmark, has announced the name of its third cable extrusion tower under construction at its high-voltage power cable plant in Karlskrona, Sweden. The tower, standing at 200 meters and the second tallest in the Nordics, will be known as NKT Crown, symbolizing the company’s significant investments in the factory and the city’s positive growth as part of the ongoing expansion to meet the demand for high-voltage power cables.

The name was chosen by representatives from NKT and Emma Swahn Nilsson, Chair of the Municipal Executive Board in Karlskrona, from a pool of over 600 suggestions. NKT Crown is envisioned to stand as a beacon above Karlskrona, forming a new skyline alongside the company’s existing towers, signifying a commitment to a greener world, continued investments, and future growth in support of the global shift towards reliable and clean energy.

The tower’s name also pays homage to the historical roots of the city’s name, Karlskrona, which translates to Karl’s crown, in honor of King Karl XI, the city’s founder in 1680. The tower was officially christened by Ebba Busch, Sweden’s Minister for Energy, Business, and Industry, and Deputy Prime Minister, during a ceremony at the high-voltage factory.

NKT’s CEO, Claes Westerlind, expressed his satisfaction with the chosen name, highlighting the tower’s role in meeting the rising demand for high-voltage power cables amid the renewable energy transition. The company is investing €1.3 billion in expanding production and installation capabilities at the factory, aiming to make it the world’s largest facility for high-voltage offshore power cables by 2027. The EU has recognized this project as the first European net-zero strategic initiative, granting it national priority status for streamlined administrative processes and faster approvals.
