New York’s Mary Rosado Latest Judge with Democrat Activist Resume to Halt Trump Agenda

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Mary Rosado, a Democratic Party activist, is the most recent judge to rule against the Trump administration. Rosado issued a temporary injunction on Friday to prevent the opening of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center on Rikers Island, despite a deal between New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the Trump administration.

Rosado scheduled the next hearing in the case for May 29. Like other judges who have intervened to block Trump’s executive authority, Rosado’s background mirrors theirs. She is a registered Democrat in New York, where Supreme Court judges are elected based on party affiliation.

Public records show that Rosado contributed nearly $12,000 to Democratic campaigns and committees between 2005 and 2019. Her donations include support for the New York County Democratic Committee and Friends of Adriano Espaillat, a Democratic congressman and the first illegal immigrant to serve in Congress.

Espaillat has advocated for hindering federal law enforcement’s efforts to arrest illegal immigrants, including those who have committed additional crimes beyond entering the country illegally. Rosado has a track record of rulings that obstruct immigration enforcement, such as a previous decision preventing New York from blocking buses transporting illegal migrants.

Despite New York’s mandatory retirement age of 70 for judges, Rosado, who is 75 years old, continues to serve on the state’s Supreme Court. The state constitution allows for extensions of up to two years if a judge is deemed mentally and physically capable of fulfilling their duties and necessary to expedite court business. Rosado will reach the retirement age limit in December when she turns 76.
