An F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet has been reported lost at sea after falling overboard while being towed on the USS Harry S. Truman.
The Navy Chief of Information’s office disclosed that, along with the fighter jet, a tow tractor was also lost in the Red Sea where the aircraft carrier was operating.
According to a press release, the aircraft’s crew lost control of it, resulting in the mishap.
The incident occurred on April 28, and despite the loss of the aircraft and tractor, all personnel were safe, with one sailor sustaining minor injuries.
CNN reported that the jet sank after the Truman made a sharp turn to avoid Houthi fire, as claimed by the rebel group in a recent attack on the aircraft carrier in the Red Sea.
President Donald Trump previously shared a video in April showing a U.S. military strike against Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting U.S. vessels in the Red Sea.
The Houthis have reportedly targeted American warships over 174 times and commercial vessels over 145 times in the Red Sea, Suez Canal, and Gulf of Aden since 2023, as per the White House.
In a separate incident, the USS Harry S. Truman was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel while in the Mediterranean Sea in February.
