The AMG CLS 63 made way for the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, but now the latter is making room for an all-electric successor. Affalterbach is bidding farewell to the powerful sedan’s combustion engine in favor of an electric setup. This new sedan, developed as an EV from scratch, will be the first of its kind from AMG and will be revealed in June. Ahead of the official unveiling, here’s a teaser to build anticipation.
With a design reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan, the sloping roofline may hint at an elongated coupe, but the outline of rear doors is visible. Official images of a camouflaged prototype reveal a more practical four-door layout. It’s uncertain if the new model will retain the liftback style of the outgoing gas model or transition to a traditional sedan shape. The EV was first teased in 2022 with the Vision AMG concept, showcasing a fresh design compared to the V-8 sedan AMG has been offering for seven years.
Featuring four doors, a long hood, and a spacious rear, this will be a sizable car. The prototype exudes a commanding presence, sitting low to the ground; however, a version resembling an SUV with a raised suspension is also in development. Both models will utilize the AMG.EA platform, an in-house initiative aimed at making electric vehicles thrilling to drive.
Powering the sedan will be YASA’s axial-flux motors, capable of producing 480 hp and 590 lb-ft while being lighter than radial-flux motors. Equipping one at each axle could result in an all-wheel-drive setup with nearly 1,000 horsepower and over 1,000 lb-ft of torque, putting it in competition with models like the Porsche Taycan Turbo and the Audi RS E-Tron GT. Although the sedan may be heavier than the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, it should offer improved aerodynamics for enhanced range.
While performance specs are crucial, AMG is facing uncertainties about the future of these two models. Enthusiasts often prefer large-displacement combustion engines over silent electric drivetrains. Though electric vehicles provide instant torque for quick acceleration, the driving experience may lack the character of a traditional engine. The shift away from combustion engines raises questions about the essence of an AMG vehicle. Time will tell if buyers embrace the electric sedan and if Mercedes can maintain its V-8 promise.
