Two Georgia deputies were shot during a traffic stop in Evans, Ga., on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of one of them, according to law enforcement officials. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deputy’s death at 6:30 p.m. and stated that the other deputy was hospitalized, as reported by WRDW-TV. The suspect, James Blake Montgomery, was reportedly located in a camper near Mile Marker 194 off Belair Road, close to Augusta, according to Columbia County deputies speaking to WRDW. Helicopters and drones were deployed to aid in the capture of Montgomery. Authorities communicated over police radio to capture a photo of the suspect believed to be in the trailer at the Arrowood Mobile Home Community. Governor Brian Kemp released a statement regarding the shooting, expressing condolences for the fallen deputy and well-wishes for the injured officer.
