On Easter Sunday, Pope Francis was seen riding in the new Electric Popemobile, a Mercedes-Benz G-Class-based vehicle. This marked his final ride in the electric Popemobile, which was gifted to him by Mercedes-Benz four months ago. At 88 years old, Pope Francis became the first head of the Catholic Church to use an electric Mercedes for public appearances.

In his last ride on Easter Sunday, the frail Pope Francis delighted crowds in St. Peter’s Square with a short tour in the open-top G-Class. He was seated in a raised chair in the back of the customized Popemobile, waving to the enthusiastic crowds. This event was captured in photos that surprised many.

Mercedes-Benz’s CEO, Ola Källenius, highlighted the significance of this new Popemobile being fully electric during the handover ceremony in the Vatican. The vehicle, painted in classic pearl white, is equipped with features tailored to the pontiff’s needs during public appearances. This includes an elevated swiveling single seat and two additional seats for passengers.

The new Electric Popemobile serves as a symbol of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electromobility and decarbonization, as well as a tribute to Pope Francis’ trust in the company.
