Belgium-based consultancy firm Hinicio is advocating for the development of hydrogen hubs at ports in Latin America and the Caribbean to promote sustainable energy practices and advance the hydrogen economy in the region. At an event in Colombia, Pilar Henríquez from Hinicio discussed the potential for ports to play a crucial role in decarbonizing logistics chains and addressed the challenges they face in becoming sustainable energy hubs. The company highlighted the importance of ports in supplying clean energy to various sectors and enabling the decarbonization of transportation methods. Hinicio recommended strategic actions for ports in the region, emphasizing the need for long-term vision, alignment with regulatory frameworks, public-private partnerships, and preparation for alternative fuel supply in the maritime industry. The maritime industry has shown interest in green shipping corridors in the Global South, with recent initiatives in countries like Chile and Brazil aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use of low- or zero-carbon fuels.
