Japan Is Thinking Of Lowering Safety Standards For US Automakers

Japan is contemplating easing its car safety regulations to strike a trade deal with the United States, as per a report by Japanese business publication Nikkei. US automakers have expressed concerns about the stringent safety standards hindering their entry into the Japanese market.

Tokyo is considering relaxing certain safety requirements, such as crash safety tests, to accommodate American automakers. The discussions between Japan and the US commenced last week. Japanese car companies, like others, face a 25 percent import tariff when exporting vehicles to the US. Additionally, President Donald Trump imposed a 24 percent general import duty on the nation, temporarily reduced to 10 percent. Japan aims to permanently lower this rate through the negotiations.
