The Mazda MX-5, a beloved roadster and sports car, has reached its 10th year in the current generation. With the rise of electric vehicles and changing industry standards, concerns arise about the future of such cars.

Mazda announced a new engine for the next-generation MX-5, emphasizing the importance of keeping the car as lightweight as possible for a true sports car experience. The goal is to maintain a curb weight below 1,000 kilograms, which would be quite remarkable.

The company’s general manager of design, Masashi Nakayama, highlighted that the MX-5 will continue to be a compact vehicle. Mazda’s chief technical officer, Ryuichi Umeshita, confirmed that the upcoming model will stick to a naturally aspirated engine instead of opting for a turbocharged one. The new MX-5 is expected to feature a four-cylinder 2.5-liter Skyactiv-Z engine, tailored to suit the requirements of a small and agile roadster.

Understanding the preferences of MX-5 enthusiasts and sports car aficionados, Mazda has decided to offer the new gasoline engine with a manual transmission. While the exact release date of the next Mazda MX-5 is unknown, considering the ND generation’s refresh in 2024, it is likely to be a few more years before the new model hits the market.
