An Alabama man accused of fatally shooting a 28-year-old mother, her 5-year-old son, and her boyfriend last July while they were in a car, appeared in court on Thursday. He was ordered to stand trial in front of a grand jury.
During the court hearing in Jefferson County, prosecutors revealed that the dying mother, Arkia “Kia” Berry, sent a text with the word “Jaco,” believed to identify Jacorian Deshawn McGregor, 25, as the alleged shooter, according to AL.com.
The tragic incident took place on July 13, 2024, at Echo Highlands Park in Birmingham. Berry, her son Landyn Brooks, and Eric Ashley Jr. were found dead inside a blue Nissan Maxima with multiple gunshot wounds.
Detectives discovered shell casings and surveillance footage showing a lime green Kia Soul arriving and leaving the area quickly after the shooting. McGregor was arrested in February following an investigation that uncovered incriminating phone records and messages linking him to the crime.
Despite McGregor’s attorney arguing that the evidence was circumstantial, the judge ordered him to be detained without bond and the case to be presented to the grand jury.
