A convicted child murderer, Thomas Sanders, who originally received a death sentence in 2014 but had it commuted to life in prison by former President Joe Biden, is now facing the possibility of the death penalty again in Louisiana.
Sanders, now 67, was convicted by a Louisiana federal jury for the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Lexis Roberts from Las Vegas in 2010. He was initially sentenced to death, marking the first federal death penalty case in the Western District of Louisiana.
Sanders was one of 37 death row inmates whose sentences were commuted by Biden before he left office. Recently, a grand jury in Catahoula Parish indicted Sanders on state charges.
Catahoula Parish District Attorney Brad Burget expressed outrage at Biden’s decision to commute Sanders’ sentence, emphasizing the brutality of Sanders’ crimes. Burget highlighted the tragic events that led to Lexis’ death, involving the murder of her mother and her subsequent kidnapping and murder by Sanders.
Sanders and Lexis’ mother, Suellen, initially met in Las Vegas where Sanders worked at a warehouse. Following Suellen’s murder in Arizona, Sanders abducted Lexis and transported her across the country to Louisiana, where he killed her.
The Catahoula Parish authorities eventually apprehended Sanders, who was found at a truck stop in Mississippi. Burget condemned Biden’s decision to commute Sanders’ sentence and vowed to seek justice for Lexis through the state legal system.
In presenting the case to a grand jury in Catahoula Parish, Burget hopes for a fair and just outcome. Louisiana’s legal process requires capital offense cases to be presented to a grand jury for consideration.
Sanders, originally arrested on federal charges, is now facing state charges following the recent grand jury indictment. Burget presented evidence to the grand jury, leading to Sanders’ indictment on state charges.
