62% Fewer Deaths: Why the Latest Findings on the HPV Vaccine Are Cause for Relief

A recent study in the United States has shown that deaths from cervical cancer have decreased by up to 62% thanks to the HPV vaccine. The virus, which can lead to cervical cancer in severe cases, affects about 80% of the population at some point in their lives. The introduction of more effective vaccines since 2006/2007 has significantly contributed to the decline in cervical cancer deaths. The current vaccines protect against 90% of HPV variants and are most effective when administered before the first sexual contact. Even individuals vaccinated at the age of 25 can still reduce their risk of HPV infection by 50%.

A study by the Medical University of South Carolina revealed that cervical cancer mortality rates have dropped by 62% over the last 19 years. The number of deaths per 100,000 people decreased from 55 in 1992-1994 to 13 in 2019-2021, indicating the success of improved vaccines and higher vaccination rates. More countries are now including HPV vaccination in their national schedules, with some offering it for free. Achieving an 80% vaccination rate could lead to “herd immunity” and potentially eradicate the virus in the future.
