3 Things Christians Should Know about the Controversial Movie ‘Conclave’

Almost every religious group has internal divisions between conservatives and liberals who discuss beliefs, ethics, and goals. In the Vatican, these discussions sometimes resemble political theater, similar to a toned-down debate in Congress.
Lawrence (played by Ralph Fiennes) remarks to a colleague, “I feel like I’m at an American political convention.”
On the conservative side is Cardinal Tedesco (portrayed by Sergio Castellitto), an Italian Cardinal who opposes the liberal shift in the Catholic Church. He holds traditional views on sexuality and gender and is wary of radical Islam. He is also perceived as racist for not supporting an African Pope.
On the liberal side is Cardinal Bellini (played by Stanley Tucci), who advocates for more inclusive teachings on sexuality and gender. He believes in embracing all religions and accommodating diverse perspectives within the church. Bellini also calls for greater involvement of women in the church and takes a moderate stance on issues like homosexuality and divorce.
While there are other contenders, they face setbacks like a past scandal or personal controversies that lead to their withdrawal. The film focuses on Lawrence and Bellini’s viewpoints, often portraying Tedesco and the conservatives as exaggerated characters. The liberal group strategizes in private spaces to prevent Tedesco from becoming Pope.
A significant event shakes up the conclave in the movie’s climax, but the most controversial moments occur in the final 10 minutes. The newly elected Pope is revealed to be intersex, with male appearance but female reproductive organs and DNA.
Some viewers suggest stopping the film before the last 10 minutes for a stronger impact.
