Newark Liberty International Airport experienced its second air traffic control outage in two weeks on Friday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. This has raised concerns for travelers going to and from New Jersey. The outage, which lasted about 90 seconds, was due to a telecommunications issue affecting communications and radar display at Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which manages aircraft in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport airspace. Following the first equipment outage on April 28, over 450 flights were delayed, and 141 were canceled on Friday. The recent outage occurred just as flight schedules were starting to normalize. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy announced the Trump administration’s plan to revamp the U.S. air traffic control system to address outdated equipment causing delays at Newark. The plan includes new air traffic control centers, upgrades to telecommunications systems, and replacement radars. Duffy expressed concerns about the outdated system and stated that upgrades could take up to four years to complete if funding is secured. The recent outages have underscored the need for improvements in the air traffic control system. United Airlines has been limiting flights to and from Newark due to the ongoing issues. Travelers and officials are frustrated with the delays and cancellations, calling for immediate action to ensure air travel safety.
