Top 24 Summer Reads
It’s always exciting to discover a summer reading list that goes beyond just the latest releases! The Atlantic presents a unique take on summer reading with 24 book recommendations ranging from timeless classics to hot new titles, from quick reads to lengthy novels that may take all season to finish. R.F. Kuang’s highly-anticipated book “Katabasis” is featured on the list, as well as one of my personal favorites, “The Emperor of All Maladies” by Siddhartha Mukherjee (trust me, a biography of cancer is more captivating than you think). This diverse list recognizes that readers aren’t solely focused on new books and even introduced me to some unfamiliar titles.

The Representation of American Girl Dressing
During my childhood in the late ’80s and early ’90s, American Girl books were a significant part of my life, though I viewed them primarily as a way to promote expensive dolls. However, a detailed examination of the development of Addy, the first Black character in the series, has changed my perspective. Jaha Nailah Avery delves into discussions with the series author and historians from the advisory board, shedding light on why they selected an enslaved Black character and the significance of her attire in portraying her life. I was surprised to learn about the meticulous planning that went into creating the American Girl books and it’s rewarding to see the individuals behind it finally getting the recognition they deserve.
