The Los Angeles Chargers must be excited about the start of Jim Harbaugh’s tenure in 2024. In his first season as head coach, the team reached the playoffs and showed strength on both offense and defense. Although the season ended with a disappointing playoff loss, many did not anticipate the team making it that far in the first place.
During this offseason, the team made strategic additions in free agency, such as offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, cornerback Donte Jackson, and running back Najee Harris. In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Chargers picked talented running back Omarion Hampton in the first round, who is expected to share carries with Harris to enhance the team’s running game.
Among other draft picks were wide receiver Tre Harris, edge-rusher Kyle Kennard, and safety R.J. Mickens. Let’s evaluate the team’s best and worst draft selections.
Best: Round 3, Pick 86 – Jamaree Caldwell, DL, Oregon
The selection of Jamaree Caldwell in the third round was a standout choice. Caldwell, a powerful defensive lineman, was projected to be picked earlier in the draft, making this selection excellent value. Known for his ability to stop the run and even contribute as a pass-rusher, Caldwell brings strength and speed to the Chargers’ defense.
Worst: Round 2, Pick 55 – Tre Harris, WR, Ole Miss
While Tre Harris is a dependable receiver with impressive college stats, his selection may not be the best fit for the Chargers. Harris lacks top-end speed and his playing style overlaps with existing receivers on the team. His challenge with drops and route-running improvement needs also raise concerns about his transition to the NFL. Opting for a speedier receiver like Jack Bech, Kyle Williams, or Jaylin Noel might have been a better choice to complement the Chargers’ offense.
